The two semi-finals were won by Americans Jack Keller and George Saling. Keller had tied the 110 hurdle world record of 14.4 at the Olympic Trials. But in his semi-final, Saling had also tied that world record. In the final, Keller got off to the fastest start but was caught at the fifth barrier by Percy Beard (USA). Beard hit the next hurdle and was passed by Saling who won pulling away. Keller looked to have placed third originally, but film of the race was reviewed and the bronze medal was then given to Don Finlay (GBR).
