Summary

There were no European or World Championships between 1924 and 1928 so it was difficult to choose a favorite. The defending champion was Italy’s Pierino Gabetti and he was back in Amsterdam, and would win the silver medal this time. The gold would go in a major upset to Austria’s Franz Andrysek, who had been only 18th in Paris. Andrysek was only fourth after the snatch but his world record clean & jerk of 120.0 kg brought him the gold medal. Andrysek went on to win the 1929 European title and won a bronze at that event in 1934. The Olympic bronze was won by German Hans Wölpert, who was European Champion in 1921 and would win that title again in 1933.
