Summary

France and Italy won every Olympic gold medal in team foil from 1920-56, with both nations winning four times. In addition, the two nations went 1-2 at every Olympics in that period, save for 1924, when Italy withdrew in the final pool, protesting a decision. This was Italy’s year as they won all three matches in the final pool, comfortably defeating France, 10-6, and the French took silver. Argentina won the bronze medal in an upset over Belgium, winning their first and, through 2012, only Olympic fencing medal.
