The world record had been set in July 1928 by Canada’s Myrtle Cook in winning the Canadian Championship in 12.0. A few weeks before America’s Betty Robinson, only a 16-year-old, had run 12.0 at a meet in Chicago but the mark was never ratified as a world record. In the final, Cook and Germany’s Leni Schmidt were disqualified for false started. This left the race open for Robinson to win in 12.2, equaling the listed world record.
