Clarence "Bud" Houser was the defending champion and was the world record holder, having recorded 48.20 (158-1¾) in April 1926. Jim Corson led early with 47.00 (154-2½) in the second round, but Houser produced the winning throw in 47.32 (155-3). Finland’s Antero Kivi threw 47.23 (154-11½) to garner the silver medal.
