Men's 200 metres

Athletics at the 1928 Summer Games: Previous Summer Games ▪ Next Summer Games

Host City: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Venue(s): Olympic Stadium, Amsterdam
Date Started: July 31, 1928
Date Finished: August 1, 1928

Gold: CAN Percy Williams
Silver: GBR Walter Rangeley
Bronze: GER Helmut Körnig

The defending champion, [Jackson Scholz], was back and probably a slight favorite. But no American had medaled in the 100 in which Canada’s [Percy Williams] won. In the final, [Helmut Körnig] (GER) entered the straight leading Scholz, but with 50 metres left, Williams and [Walter Rangeley] (GBR) moved ahead. Third place was very close and the judges could not decide. At first they called it a dead-heat but then called for a run-off. Scholz declined and Körnig was given the bronze medal. Film of the race confirms that this was the correct decision.
