Summary

The defending champion, Jackson Scholz, was back and probably a slight favorite. But no American had medaled in the 100 in which Canada’s Percy Williams won. In the final, Helmut Körnig (GER) entered the straight leading Scholz, but with 50 metres left, Williams and Walter Rangeley (GBR) moved ahead. Third place was very close and the judges could not decide. At first they called it a dead-heat but then called for a run-off. Scholz declined and Körnig was given the bronze medal. Film of the race confirms that this was the correct decision.
