Although not well-known internationally Robin Reed is considered one of the greatest American wrestlers ever, finishing his career undefeated. He won the gold medal in this class comfortably, defeating his teammate Chet Newton in the final. The two had wrestled each other multiple times in the Pacific Northwest, with Reed, who did not personally like Newton at all, always winning. The bronze medal went to Japan’s Katsutoshi Naito, the first Olympic wrestling medal ever won by an Asian.
