This was virtually a U.S. national championship, as Charley Ackerly and Sam Gerson were the class of the field. Ackerly had defeated Gerson in the semi-finals of the 1920 U.S. AAU championships, which served as an unofficial Olympic Trials. They had also met twice before in collegiate matches, with each winning once. They had been captains of Ivy League wrestling teams in college – Ackerly at Cornell and Gerson at Penn.
