Of the most recent world champions, only Søren Jensen (DEN), champion in 1905, competed. He was also the defending Olympic champion in this event, having won at Athens in 1906. His countryman, Carl Jensen (DEN), had been 1907 European champion. Both lost to the Hungarian Richárd Weisz. Weisz was a remarkably versatile athlete, having won Hungarian championships in hammer throw, fencing, and weightlifting, as well as the national heavyweight wrestling title five times - 1905-09.
