The most notable absentee was [Jim Mitchel], who was on the American team but had dislocated his shoulder on the boat ride over when he fell as the ship was tossed by a violent storm. [Martin Sheridan] was not planning on competing in this event, but because of Mitchel's absence, decided to at the last minute. He made a good effort but was unable to defeat the Greek, [Nikolaos Georgantas]. This is the only time that this event has been contested at the Olympic Games.
