Overview

As in 1900, there was a football (soccer) tournament held during the 1904 Olympic Games. At least the competition was conducted as part of the Physical Culture Department of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, with the games held late in the fall, although FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) considers the 1900 and 1904 Olympic competitions to be either unofficial or exhibitions.

All the matches were held at [Francis Field] on the Washington University Campus, on the infield of the track where the track & field events had been held in August-September. Because the American teams that competed, both from St. Louis, were also involved in league play at the same time, there has been some controversy about which matches should be considered as part of the Olympic event.
