Ray Ewry won the first three of his 10 Olympic gold medals in the standing jumps. In the standing high jump, he won the competition easily over Baxter, but went on to break the world record with a jump of 1.63 metres. He then broke that record with another jump of 1.655 metres. In all three events, he won by large margins. As a child, Ray Ewry was paralyzed with polio and took up jumping exercises in order to strengthen his legs. He did so to such an extent that he became the greatest exponent of the standing jumps ever seen.
