Summary

The format of this event was two round-robin pools of four fencers each. The first to score three touches in each match was the winner. The winners of each pool, Eugène-Henri Gravelotte and Henri Callot, both Frenchmen, then met in the finals to determine the champion. There is no record of other matches being held to determine the other positions. Gravelotte was a medical student who celebrated his victory that night by drinking a glass of retzina (wine) at the Acropolis.
