She continued to be a top sprinter internationally in both sports. Through the 1976 Winter Olympics, she lost only two major 500 meter sprints and in 1976 won three medals at Innsbruck. In addition, later in 1976 she repeated her cycling world championship after a third place in 1975. As a speed skater, she set three world records in the 500 meters, the last one of which, 40.68, set in 1976, lasted until 1981; and two world records in the combined sprint competition. After 1976, Sheila Young retired from competition and married U.S. Olympic cyclist Jim Ochowicz. However, a few years later Sheila Young began to get the urge to compete again. After the 1980 Olympics she laced up the skates and briefly competed again internationally. Personal Bests: 500 - 40.68 (1976); 1000 - 1.24.38 (1976); 1500 - 2.14.68 (1976); 3000 - 5.02.88 (1976). |
