Individually he lost his first round match, a big upset, but his golf career was only starting. Wood’s first big year was 1906, when he won the North & South Amateur, finished 31st in the U.S. Open, and was runner-up in the Western Amateur to Ned Sawyer The next year he went to the quarter-finals of the U.S. Amateur, losing to the redoubtable Jerry Travers. In 1910 he made it to the finals of the U.S. Amateur, but was beaten by Bill Fownes. However, in 1912, he got revenge on Fownes by beating him in the second round of the National Championship, only to lose in the semi-finals to Chick Evans. Warren Wood finally won another major title in 1913 when he took the Western Amateur. He served with the American Red Cross during World War I. |
