Igor Voronchikhin made his international début at the 1964 Olympics, where he won a surprising bronze in the 30 km, was seventh at 15 km and eleventh in the 50 km. He won his second Olympic medal in the relay race, another bronze. Voronchikhin was not included on the 1966 Soviet World Championship team, so he made his next and last international appearance at the 1968 Olympics, placing 31st in the 50 km. Domestically Voronchikhin won two Soviet titles, in 1964 in the 30 km and the relay in 1966. After his competitive retirement, Voronchikhin worked as a cross-country ski coach with Burevestnik Moskva. He also was a long-time coach of the Soviet national cross-country ski team, at first with the women and later the men’s team. In the 1990s Voronchikhin was the head coach of the Russian junior cross-country ski team. |
