Biography

Ice hockey forward Gérard “Gerry” Théberge spent two seasons in the Quebec Junior Hockey League from 1947 through 1949, with the Granby Royals and the Victoriaville Tigers, prior to moving to Ontario and spending another two seasons at the junior level from 1949 through 1951, this time with the Ontario Hockey Association’s Guelph Baltimores. After two years in the Lower St. Lawrence Hockey League with the Jonquiere Marquis and the Matane Red Rocks he joined the OHA’s Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen in 1953 and remained with them through 1960. During this period he won an Allan Cup, given annually to the Canadian senior men’s ice hockey champions, in 1955 and was invited to help represent Canada with his team at the 1956 Winter Olympics. At the tournament he was his nation’s top scorer, scoring nine goals in eight matches and taking home a bronze medal. After his tenure with the Dutchmen he took the 1960-1961 season off and returned to the sport in 1961 as a member of the OHA’s Woodstock Athletics. He spent three seasons with the team and retired from active play in 1964, having suited up for only five games in the previous season. He died in June 2000 but remained athletically active throughout his entire life, winning a local golf tournament in Rockwell, Ontario just three days before his death.
