Biography

Levan "Teddy" Tediashvili is considered the greatest technical wrestler in Soviet history. He won Olympic gold medals in 1972 middleweight freestyle as well as 1976 light-heavyweight freestyle. He also won world championships in 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1975, and European championships in 1974, 1976, and 1978. In Tediashvili's Olympic gold medals, he twice defeated the United States' Peterson brothers – John in 1972, and Ben in 1976. Tediashvili studied law during his wrestling career and was known as a brash performer who often played to the crowd during his matches. He did not lose a match between 1971 and 1976. Tediashvili was also a Soviet and world champion at sambo, the Russian self-defense sport.
