Biography

Defender Magnus Svensson started his hockey career in 1980 with Tranås AIF and played there until 1983. From 1983 until the end of his career in 2002, Svensson played mostly with Leksands IF, except for short spells with HC Lugano in Switzerland in 1990-91, HC Davos in Switzerland in 1994-95, the Florida Panthers in 1995-96, and with Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in Switzerland in 1999-2000. With Leksands, Svensson never won a Swedish title, his best finish a runner-up in 1989, but he was selected to the 1994 Swedish Championships all-star team. Svensson was drafted by the Calgary Flames of the NHL in 1987, but the Flames traded his rights to the Florida Panthers and Svensson played 46 games with them during the 1995-96 season.

Internationally Svensson was capped 127 times with the Swedish national team. He played at the 1994 Olympic Winter Games and at the 1987, 1990, 1994 and 1997 World Championships. Svensson won an Olympic gold in 1994, was 1987 World Champion, won silvers at the 1990 and 1997 World Championships, bronze at the 1994 World Championships and was the European champion in 1990. He was selected as the best defenseman at the 1994 World Championships, where he was also the leading goal scorer. He was awarded the Stora Grabbars Märke (Big Boys’ Badge) #148 in ice hockey. After finishing his playing career, Svensson worked as an ice hockey coach with Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in Switzerland, Fagersta AIK, Borlänge HF and Leksands IF.
