Biography

Born in Haiti, Bruny Surin's family moved to Canada in 1975 and he made his début in major international competition at the 1987 Pan American Games, where he was 15th in the long jump, repeating that finish at the 1988 Olympics. Surin added a bronze medal in the 100 metres event to his collection at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, where he was seventh in the long jump. At the 1991 World Championships he was eighth in the 100, winning a bronze medal at the 1993 World Championships as a member of the Canadian 4x100 m relay team. At the 1994 Commonwealth Games he won gold in the 4x100, but was eliminated in the semis of the 100 m. Surin won a silver medal at the 1995 World Championships in the 100 and a gold medal as a member of the Canadian 4x100 relay team. At the Atlanta Olympics the Canadian relay team was not favored, despite having won almost all the recent titles available, becuase they had done so in the United States’ absence. The Canadian team beat the United States by almost half a second, however, to establish itself as the best relay team in the world. Surin and the Canadian team again won gold at the 1997 World Championships and the 1998 Goodwill Games. His final major medal was silver in the 100 at the 1999 World Championships.

Personal Bests: 100 – 9.84 (1999); LJ – 8.03 (1987).
