Biography

Werner Stocker was an economics student at the University of Basel when he teamed up with [Ekkehard Fasser], [Kurt Meier], and [Rolf Strittmatter] to form a four-man bobsled crew that would come in third at the 1987 European Championships. In 1988 Strittmatter was replaced by [Marcel Fässler] and, together, they travelled to the 1988 Winter Olympics, where they pulled off a surprising victory, taking advantage of a disastrous third run from defending Olympic champion [Wolfgang Hoppe’s] East German team and winning by a margin of 0.07 seconds. Stocker never again won a major international medal and soon returned to his studies in Basel.
