Biography

Ice hockey goaltender Wayne Stephenson spent two successful years, from 1963 through 1965, in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League with the Winnipeg Braves, being named the league’s top goaltender and MVP in 1965. From there he joined the Canadian men’s national ice hockey team and stayed with them until 1971, winning bronze medals at the 1966 and 1967 World Championships, as well as the 1968 Winter Olympics. In the latter tournament he minded the net for three Canadian victories. He was signed with the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League in 1971, but spent nearly his entire first season with the affiliated Kansas City Blues of the Central Hockey League and suited up for only two matches with St. Louis. After two more seasons in St. Louis he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and won the Stanley Cup during his first year on the team. He had continued success with the Flyers, skating in All-Star Games in 1976 and 1978, and was traded the NHL’s Washington Capitals in 1979, with whom he finished his career in 1981. In his later years he was a financial analyst in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and eventually moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where he died in June 2010. He is a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
