Biography

Walter Staley made the first of his three Olympic appearances in 1952 when he placed 18th in the individual competition and won a bronze medal in the team event. In both the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, Staley failed to finish, as on both occasions his horses sustained injuries which prevented them from completing the courses. At the Pan American Games, Staley won a gold medal in the individual three-day event in 1955, and in 1959, was a member of the USA team (with Michael Page, J. Michael Plumb, and the non-Olympian William Hogard) that won the silver medal in eventing. Staley attended the University of Missouri where he earned a Ph.D. and then joined the family business.
