Biography

Vyacheslav Starshinov began playing ice hockey with Spartak Moskva in 1957 and played there until his first retirement in 1972. With Spartak Moskva, Starshinov won three Soviet titles (1962, 1967, 1969) and was the best goal scorer of the Soviet Championships in 1967 (47 goals) and 1968 (46 goals) and in 1968, also scored the most points at the Soviet Championships. In 1972 Starshinov retired and worked as the head coach of Spartak Moskva for the next two seasons, placing second at the 1973 Soviet Championships. In 1975 he made a playing comeback and played one season with Spartak Moskva, before moving to Japan in 1976, where he played with Oji Eagles, also serving as their head coach. In 1978 Starshinov returned to Russia and then played one season again with Spartak Moskva, before finally retiring in 1979.

Starshinov also had a long career on the Soviet National team from 1960-72, captaining the team from 1969-71. He played 182 international games and scored 149 goals, winning two Olympic golds, nine World titles (1963-71), and eight European Championships (1963-70). He also won two silvers at the European Championships (1961, 1971) and a bronze at the World Championships (1961). Starshinov was named the best forward at the 1965 World Championships and was the leading goal scorer at the 1963 and 1966 World Championships. Starshinov made his last international appearance in 1972, taking part in the legendary Summit Series between Soviet Union and Canada.

Starshinov graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute (then named Moscow Aerospace Technology Institute) in 1964 and received a candidate degree in pedagogy in 1975. Since 1979, Starshinov he has worked as a professor at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute. From 1999-2002 he was the vice-president of hockey club Spartak Moskva and since 2002 he has been the president of the Spartak Moskva hockey club. In 2000 Starshinov received the Olympic Order in Silver, and in 2007 was inducted to IIHF Hall of Fame. He has also written two books Я – центрфорвард (I – Centre Forward) in 1970 and Хоккейная школа (The School of Hockey) in 1974.
