Prior to winning a gold in the Olympic relay in 1960, Shirley Stobs' greatest success had been a gold medal in the 4×100 m freestyle (with Molly Botkin, Joan Spillane, and Chris von Saltza) and a silver medal in the 200 m freestyle at the 1959 Pan American Games. She swam for the Miami Shores CC and won her only AAU title when she took the indoor 100 y freestyle in 1959. |
