Archie Stinchcombe

Archie Stinchcombe went to Canada when he was six months old and later played hockey at all levels in Ontario. After playing with Mic-Macs, the Ontario Hockey Association champion, Stinchcombe returned to England to join Streatham and after only a few weeks in the English League he was chosen for the 1936 Olympic team. At the Olympics, Stinchcombe played in six of the seven matches and was later a member of the British team that won the European title in 1937 and 1938. Despite losing the sight of one eye in a hockey accident as a child, he enjoyed a long and successful playing career. After leaving Streatham he played for Nottingham Panthers and Wembley Lions and captained the British team at the 1948 Olympics before closing his career as a coach at Nottingham. During the war, Stinchcombe worked in bomber construction and later entered the engineering business.
