Edward Spencer was initially a long-distance specialist who competed in the London-Brighton walk. On turning to track racing he narrowly won a bronze medal in the 10 mile walk at the 1908 Olympics. Spencer and [Frank Carter] walked in together and were given identical times, but the judges gave the verdict to Spencer. Born in Lancashire, Spencer moved to London where he worked as a solicitor’s clerk.
