Biography

Playing on the winning team in 1908 and 1920, Stanley Shoveller was the first man in Olympic history to win two gold medals for hockey. Shoveller was one of the boys who introduced the game to Kingston Grammar Scholl and was the greatest of the many fine players who attended the school. He joined Hampstead in 1899 and first played for Surrey the follow year. After being selected to play for the South in 1901 he won the first of his 35 England caps in 1902. As a centre-forward he scored in 26 of these matches and accumulated a total of 76 goals for England. He captained the England side from 1910 until his retirement in 1921. During the 1908 Olympic tournament he scored a total of seven goals and although he celebrated his 39th birthday during the 1920 Olympic Games he added to his reputation as a prodigious scorer with eight goals in England's 12-1 victory over Belgium. During the war Stanley Shoveller won the Military Cross serving as a captain in the Rifle Brigade.
