In both the 1956 Final Trials and the Olympic Final, Joel Shankle finished third in the 110 meter hurdles behind Lee Calhoun and Jack Davis. Shankle was also a fine long jumper, and decathlete, winning the 1955 NCAA long jump for Duke and placing third in the AAU decathlon that year. He later became a pilot for American Airlines.
