Biography

In both the 1956 Final Trials and the Olympic Final, Joel Shankle finished third in the 110 meter hurdles behind Lee Calhoun and Jack Davis. Shankle was also a fine long jumper, and decathlete, winning the 1955 NCAA long jump for Duke and placing third in the AAU decathlon that year. He later became a pilot for American Airlines.

Personal Bests: 100y – 9.7 (1954); 110H – 13.7y (1956); HJ – 6-4 (1.93) (1955); PV – 13-9 (4.19) (1956); LJ – 24-8¼ (7.52) (1955); Dec – 6445 (1955).
