Biography

A successful national and international ice hockey forward, Wallace "Wally" Schreiber had a long and varied career that began in earnest in 1980 with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. After a season with the Western Hockey League's Regina Pats, he was scouted by the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League, but his professional career would not materialize until 1987, when he began suiting up with the Minnesota North Stars, and he nearly quit the sport in 1986. In the meantime he played for the Fort Wayne Komets of the International Hockey League (1982-1986, and was the league's points leader in 1984), the Canadian national team (1986-1988), and Wiener EV of Austria (1987-1988). At the 1988 Winter Olympics he played in eight games and scored one goal for Canada, who placed fourth. He stayed with the North Stars for the 1988-1989 season, but also played for the Komets and Kalamazoo Wings.

Beginning in 1989 Schreiber would spend the remainder of hockey career, which lasted until 2000, between the Canadian national team and squads in the German league. The International Ice Hockey Federation had first allowed professionals to compete at the Olympics in 1988 (although no NHL teams granted their players the time off to attend) and this paid off for the Canadians in 1992 and 1994 when they won silver medals at the Olympic tournaments. In the first, Schreiber had two goals in eight games and, in the second, he managed one goal in just as many matches. He was also a member of Team Canada when they won a bronze medal at the 1995 World Championships. In Germany he skated with Schwenninger ERC (1989-1993), EC Hedos Munchen (1993-1994), EV Landshut (1994-1999), and the Hannover Scorpions (1999-2000).
