Marjory Saunders moved from England to British Columbia, Canada at a young age and served during World War II as a wireless operator out of the port city of Prince Rupert. Having taken up archery in her youth she became a Boy Scout leader and later established the Maple Ridge Archery Club in a town that became her lifelong home. By the time she made the Summer Olympics with the national team, in 1972, she was not only the oldest competitor from her adopted country, but the oldest archer as well. She placed 32nd in a field of 40 competitors in the women’s individual event. She made a second Olympic appearance at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, this time as a national coach and international judge. Outside of sports, she served as a member of the Maple Ridge Historical Society and, when she died at the age of 97 in November 2010, she was Canada’s oldest living former Olympic participant. |
