Ernie Roe

Ernie Roe became interested in weightlifting as a youngster and used to practice by lifting large stones from a local quarry. A coal miner by profession, he was a member of Bulwell Weightlifting Club throughout his career.

Six times British champion, he placed sixth in the 1946 World Championship and was fourth three years later in Holland. He was 2nd in the 1949 European Championships Light-Heavyweight class (350.0 kg.), and 3rd in the 1950 European Championships Light-Heavyweight class (357.5 kg.). Eighth in the light-heavyweight division in the 1948 London Games, he retired from competition at the age of 43 due to injuries received in a mining accident.

Aged 88 at time of death (late November or early December), so likely born in 1919.
