Carl Robie

At the 1964 Olympics, Carl Robie was the fastest qualifier in both the 200 butterfly and the 400 IM, but in the finals he only placed second in the fly and fourth in the IM. It was thought at the time that Robie had missed his chance for top Olympic honors, but he made a surprising comeback to win the 200 butterfly at the 1968 Games. Robie won a total of nine AAU championships, including five straight wins in the outdoor 200 butterfly from 1961, and he won a gold medal in this event at the 1963 Pan-American Games. Robie set four world records in the 200m butterfly and two of them came in separate races on the same day in August 1962. He won two NCAA titles for the University of Michigan, and after graduation he attended Dickinson Law School. Robie practiced civil trial law in Sarasota, Florida, and was admitted to nine bars in six states. In 1976 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
