Susi Riermeier, who later became a physician, started her sports career as a cross-country skier, participating in the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, finishing 31st in the 5 km and 21st at 10 km. She won eight West German titles\: 5 km (1978, 1981); 10 km (1977, 1979, 1981); and 15 km (1978-80).
Riermeier then turned to long-distance running with a personal best in the marathon of 2-36:10, winning the 1984 West German national title. She also participated at the 1983 World Championships in the 10K and at the International Cross-Country Championships in 1985-86.
