Biography

Forward Romeo Rivers won the Allan Cup, given annually to the Canadian national champions in the senior men’s ice hockey division, with the Winnipeg Hockey Club in 1931, which earned him and his team a chance to represent Canada at the 1932 Winter Olympics. At the Olympics he played in six games and scored five goals, including perhaps the most important one; with six minutes left in the game, Rivers tied the score between Canada and the United States, thus securing the goal medal. Later that year, he was named the Manitoba Senior Hockey League’s scoring champion. He had a long history of hockey affiliation with Manitoba, beginning with his junior career with the Winnipeg Victorias and the Elmwood Millionaires from 1924 through 1927. He joined the Winnipeg Eaton’s, then the Winnipeg CPR, for his first two senior seasons, then suited up with the Winnipegs from 1929 through 1933. He joined the Winnipeg Monarchs later that year and played with Canada at the 1935 World Championships as a member of the team, adding a second international gold medal to his collection. After another season with the Winnipegs, he had a final run with the Winnipeg Canada Packers before retiring from the sport. After his hockey career, he worked as a mechanic at his garage business and played baseball into his senior years. As a member of the 1935 Monarchs he was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and he is an Honoured Member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
