Annegret Richter

Annegret Richter ran legendary duels in the 1970s with the East German sprinters, especially Renate Stecher. Richter won a 1972 4×100 Olympic relay title in a fascinating final, when her teammate Heide Ecker-Rosendahl held off Stecher on the anchor leg. She crowned her career by winning the 100 in Montréal, adding Olympic silver in the 1976 200 and 4×100.

Richter won her first international title under her maiden name Irrgang, becoming 1971 European Champion in the 4x100, and placing second in that event in 1974. In 1973 she was European Indoor Champion in the 60 metres and in the 4×1 lap relay. She earned 28 national titles and also set 17 world records. She retired in 1977 but returned in 1979, and was nominated for the fictional West German team for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, but did not start due to the US-led boycott, and subsequently retired for good. Married to 400 metre hurdler Manfred Richter, their children Daniela and Marcus have became successful national track & field athletes.
