Biography

Don Quarrie, one of the top sprinters in the world in the 1970s, made the 1968 Jamaican national team as a 17-year-old and was set to compete at that year's Summer Olympics, but injured himself during training and missed the Games. He first came into prominence at the 1970 Commonwealth Games, where he won both the 100 m and 200 m titles and anchored the Jamaican 4x100 relay team to the gold medal. Quarrie repeated his sprint double at the 1971 Pan American Games, equaling the 200 metre world record of 19.8 in the 200 final. One of the top favorites for the Olympic 200 gold prior the 1972 Olympics, he again suffered from injuries at the Games when he pulled a muscle in his 200 semi-final and had to abandon the race. In 1974 Quarrie became the first athlete to retain both 100 and 200 metre titles at the Commonwealth Games. In 1975 he again equaled the 200 world record of 19.8 and just, before the 1976 Munich Olympics, equaled the 100 metre world record of 9.9 at the California Relays. The 1976 Olympics were the first Olympics where Quarrie could compete injury free and he won the 200 metre title easily, but was surprised by Hasely Crawford in the 100 final and had to settle for silver. At the 1978 Commonwealth Games he won his third consecutive 100 metre title, but did not finish the 200 due to injury. Although past his prime, Quarrie competed at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics, winning 200 m bronze in 1980 and a 4x100 m relay silver in 1984. He also won the American AAU titles in the 200 metres in 1971 and 1974-75 and in the 100 metres in 1975 and 1977. During his career he set four world records, one at 100 metres, and three times of 19.8 in the 200. He was also selected as the Jamaican Sportsman of the Year in 1970-71 and 1975-77. After his athletics career, Quarrie was active with Jamaican Amateur Athletics Association.

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.07 (1976); 200 – 19.86 (1971).
