Biography

Markus Prock is among the greatest ever luge sliders. Prock competed at six Olympics. His Olympic record of two silvers and a bronze pales in comparison to his overall career, but he had difficulty getting past Georg Häckl at the Olympics. Prock was a five-time World Champion, twice in singles (1987, 1996) and three times in the mixed team event (1996-97, 1999). He won 14 medals at Worlds, adding four silvers, and five bronzes, with seven medals in singles. Prock was a three-time European Champion in singles (1994, 1998, 2002), adding two silvers in 1990 and 2000 in singles and five medals in mixed team. He was at his best on the seasonal World Cup Circuit, winning 10 singles titles (1988, 1991-97, 1999, 2002), and 14 medals in all. In all, Prock won 33 World Cup singles races.

After his retirement from competition, Prock became sports director of the Tyrolean Luge Association. He started his own sports management agency in 1997, managing his nephew, Gregor Schlierenzauer, who became the world’s top ski jumper in the 2010s, as well as one of his greatest competitors, Armin Zöggeler. Prock was honored by the Austrian Republic with the Silver Medal for Meritorious Service in 1992 and in 1994, received the Gold Medal.
