Biography

Vladimir Petrov was one of the best forwards of the Soviet team in the 1970s. He began playing hockey with Krylya Sovetov Moskva in 1965 and joined CSKA Moskva in 1967, playing there through 1981. With CSKA Moskva Petrov won eleven Soviet titles (1968, 1970-73, 1977-81) and eleven European Champions Cup titles (1969-74, 1976, 1978-81). He led the Soviet Championships in points scored in 1970, 1973, 1975, and 1978-79 and the was the leading goal scorer at the Soviet Championships in 1970 (51 goals), 1973 (27 goals) and 1979 (26 goals). He was also selected as the best line of the Soviet Championships with Boris Mikhaylov and Valery Kharlamov in 1971, 1975 and 1978. Petrov finished his playing career with SKA Leningrad from 1981-83.

Internationally Petrov played 281 games with Soviet national team and scored 189 goals. He won two Olympic golds in 1972 and 1976 and won silver in 1980. Petrov was a nine-time World Champion (1969-71, 1973-75, 1978, 1979, 1981) and seven time European Champion (1969, 1970, 1973-75, 1979, 1981). He also won silvers (1972, 1976) and bronze (1977) at the World Championships and silvers (1971, 1972, 1976, 1978) and bronze (1977) at the European Championships. Petrov also scored the most points at the 1973, 1977 and 1979 World Championships, and with 18 goals, he was also the top goal scorer at the 1973 World Championships. He also took part in the 1972 and 1974 Summit Series, and won the 1979 Challenge Cup between the Soviet Union and the NHL All-Stars.

After finishing his competitive career Petrov worked as an ice hockey official. From 1986-88 he was the head coach of VS Moskva Oblast football club, while from 1992-94 Petrov served as a president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. He has also worked as a general manager of hockey clubs SKA St. Petersburg, CSKA Moskva and Spartak Moskva. Vladimir Petrov was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2006.
