László Papp is, with Téofilo Stevenson, one of the two Olympic boxers to win three consecutive gold medals. He was so renowned in Hungary that he was allowed to turn professional, the only professional from a Communist country until the era of glasnost in the late 1980's. The southpaw quickly established the same dominance among professionals, winning the European middleweight championship in 1962. By 1965, Papp was in line for a world title fight, but Hungarian authorities recanted and stopped Papp from fighting any more as a professional. He was forced to relinguish his European crown and retire from professional boxing. Career Record: W - 26 (15); L - 0; D - 3. |
