Alan Paterson had the following podium finishes at major championships: 2nd in the 1950 British Empire Games High Jump; 1st in the 1950 European Championships High Jump, 2nd in the 1946 European Championships High Jump. In the British Empire Games he competed for Scotland.

Personal Best: HJ – 2.019 (1947).
