Biography

From 1957 through 1961, defenseman Terrence “Terry” O’Malley played junior-level ice hockey with the Toronto St. Michaels Majors of the Junior Ontario Hockey Association. When the Canadian national men’s ice hockey team was founded in 1963, O’Malley joined up and accompanied them to the 1964 Winter Olympics. He played eight matches in the tournament, but did not take home a medal, as Canada ended up in fourth place after a loss to the Soviet Union in the final and the application of a tiebreaking rule. This rule was different for the World Championships, however, and Canada is credited as the World Championship bronze medalists of that year. He split the following season between Team Canada, who did not medal at the 1965 World Championships, and the Winnipeg Maroons of the Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League. He then skated exclusively with the Canadian national team from 1965 through 1969, winning bronze medals at the 1966 (as team captain) and 1967 World Championships, and the 1968 Winter Olympics. In the latter tournament he played in he played in six games.

O’Malley’s next move was to Japan, in 1971, where he played for one season with Seibu Tetsudo Tokyo. From 1972 through 1978 he skated with Kokudo Keikaku, in addition to a role as coach, and was named league MVP with the team in 1975. He returned to Canada in 1979 in time to join the national team at the 1980 Winter Olympics, playing in six matches and ending up in sixth place. After these final Olympics he retired from active play. Since 1992 he has been an instructor at the Sicamous Hockey School in British Columbia and he was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 1998. He has also served as President of Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Saskatchewan since 2003.
