In 1916, Martin Nordenström moved with his family to Paris, France, where he worked as a physiotherapist until the outbreak of World War II. He returned to his home country, and, as a captain in the reserves was called up for duty. In 1942, he joined the International Red Cross, and joined a mission to occupied Greece. For nearly three years, Nordenström assisted the inhabitants of several islands, notably the two Cyclades islands Tinos and Syros, visiting the islands in his sailing boat. He continued his work even after the islands were liberated in 1944. On what was supposed to be his last visit prior to returning home, Nordenström embarked on the ferry Spercheios, a former Norwegian whaler. The ship, overloaded with passengers, capsized just north of Cape Zourva, killing more than 80 of its passengers, including Nordenström.
