Biography

French painter Roger Nivelt was a well-known painter and sculptor for his African motifs. He studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. During World War I he became ill from the Spanish Flu but was fortunate to fully recover. From 1925 Nivelt started extensive study trips to Africa, where he discovered his talent for painting landscapes and African people in everyday poses. He then taught art in Senegal, Gambia and Côte d’Ivoire. He also opened an art studio in Algeria. In 1941 Nivelt married painter Hélène Farey.
