Geoff Myburgh began a sixty year association with sailing at Valsbaai (False Bay) off Capetown in 1947. He began sailing dinghies in 1951 at the Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club and went on to compete in a variety of different categories. He competed as a crewman in South Africa’s 5.5 metre class team at the 1956 Olympic Games and two years later competed in the world championships of the Flying Dutchman class. He also campaigned around Europe in the Finn class. After his competitive career ended Myburgh remained in the sport as a coach and administrator and served the International Sailing Federation as an international judge and latterly as a member of the federation’s council. He was also involved with the setting up of the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship and helped to organise the 1996 Laser World Championships on his home waters.
