Biography

Camille Muffat started out primarily in individual medley but later turned to mid-distance freestyle races. The highlight of her career was winning gold in the 400 free at the 2012 London Olympics, where she also added a silver medal in the 200 free and a bronze in the 4×200 free relay with France. At the Long-Course World Championships, Muffat won four bronze medals, two in 2011 and two in 2013, but she won gold in the 200 freestyle at the 2010 Short-Course Worlds. At the Short-Course Europeans, Muffat won seven medals, with four golds, one in the 2007 200 IM, and three golds in 2012. She also won two medals (silver and bronze) at the Long-Course Europeans in 2008 and 2010. Muffat was the 200 IM gold medalist at the 2009 Mediterranean Games.

Muffat began studying for a degree in economics after high school, but left school to concentrate on her swimming. In January 2012 she was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur. She retired from competitive swimming in July 2014. In March 2015 Muffat was with a group of sports stars participating in the reality TV show "Dropped" in northwest Argentina. She was flying in a helicopter that collided with another chopper for the show, killing ten people, including Muffat and French Olympic boxing medalist [Alexis Vastine].
