Pablo Montes

Pablo Montes followed great Cuban sprinters Enrique Figuerola and Hermes Ramírez in helping his island nation to become a top international sprint relay team. In addition to his two Olympic appearances and relay silver medal, Montes finest moment came at the 1970 Central American and Caribbean Games in Panama City when he won the 100, 200, and 4×100 (with Hermes Ramírez, Juan Morales, and José Triana) gold medals, defeating his arch-rival Ramírez in both the 100 and 200. Montes also won a bronze medal in the 200 at the 1967 Pan American Games, and had three relay silver medals at the PanAms – 1967 (with Hermes Ramírez, Juan Morales, and the non-Olympian Félix Eugellés), 1971 (with Hermes Ramírez, Juan Morales, and the non-Olympian Bárbaro Bandomo), and 1975 (with José Triana, Alejandro Casañas, and Hermes Ramírez). In the PanAms Montes also finished sixth in the 400 metres 1967, fourth in the 100 metres 1971, and sixth in the 200 metres 1975. He later became a sports administrator and was chairman of the Veterans Commission of the Cuban Athletics Federation until his death.
