Between 1903 and 1909, Edwin Montague was a finalist at the AAA Championships on six occasions. As an 18-year-old he was third in 1903 and the following year, while still a junior, he improved to take second place; he won at his fourth attempt in 1907. In 1908 he equaled the world record for 600y (1:11.0) and his 1905 mark for 1,000m (2:46.2) is recognized as the inaugural UK best over the distance. He represented Surrey at football (soccer) and worked initially as a Civil Servant before entering the wine trade. Personal Bests: 220y – 22.6 (1908); 400 – 49.6e (1908). |
