Although overshadowed at national level by Jack Besford, Jack Middleton was one of Britain’s top backstroke swimmers throughout the nineteen thirties.
He qualified for the Berlin Olympics by finishing second to Besford in the trials but was only fifth in his Olympic heat.
Middleton may have challenged for a place on the 1940 Olympic team had they been held but instead saw service as an officer in the Royal Navy during wartime.
He also played water polo to a high standard.
