Cornelis Mension painted landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes, but he was best known for his paintings of birds and small animals such as mice and monkeys. As a painter he was influenced by Franz Helfferich (1871-1941) in The Hague and then by his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. His style was one of smooth impressionism. Mension was also an excellent engraver and lithographer.
